Does Workers’ Compensation Cover Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy may be covered when it is medically necessary, prescribed by the appropriate healthcare provider, and related to a condition accepted under your workers’ compensation claim. Coverage depends on the status and terms of the individual claim, the insurer’s requirements, and whether a Managed Care Organization, or MCO, is involved.

Precision Healing accepts eligible workers’ compensation claims and bills the workers’ compensation insurer directly when the required information and authorization are in place. Acceptance of a claim does not guarantee that an insurer will pay for every service.

Before treatment begins, we may need to confirm:

  • That your workers’ compensation claim is open and eligible

  • The specific conditions accepted under the claim

  • Whether your claim is enrolled in an MCO

  • Whether Precision Healing can provide covered treatment under that MCO

  • That we have a current prescription or referral for massage therapy

  • Any authorization, frequency, or duration requirements

1. Gather Your Claim Information

Please have the following information available:

  • Your workers’ compensation claim number

  • Date of the workplace injury

  • Name of the workers’ compensation insurance company

  • Adjuster’s name, telephone number, fax number, and email address

  • Name and contact information for your attending or prescribing healthcare provider

  • Information about any MCO connected to the claim

  • A current prescription or referral for massage therapy, including the diagnosis or diagnostic codes, recommended frequency, and duration when available

    2. Obtain a Prescription

Because insurer and MCO requirements vary, we may need to contact your adjuster or referring provider before confirming your first appointment..

      Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a prescription for workers’ compensation massage?

Yes. Precision Healing requires a current prescription or referral for massage therapy before beginning workers’ compensation treatment. It should identify the work-related diagnosis or diagnostic codes and, when available, the recommended frequency and duration of care.

Can I schedule before my claim is accepted?

Please contact us before scheduling. Treatment and billing rules can differ while a claim is being reviewed, and payment is not guaranteed before the insurer accepts the claim. We will review the information available and explain whether we can begin treatment.

      What is an MCO?

An MCO is a Managed Care Organization that coordinates care for some Oregon workers’ compensation claims. If your claim is enrolled in an MCO, covered treatment may need to be provided by an approved panel provider and may require prior authorization. We need to verify your MCO status before treatment because Precision Healing may not be eligible to bill every MCO-managed claim.

Will I have to pay out of pocket?

Precision Healing bills eligible workers’ compensation claims directly. However, coverage is not guaranteed. A service may not be covered if the claim is denied, the condition is not accepted, required authorization is missing, MCO rules are not followed, or the insurer otherwise determines that the service is not payable. We will let you know if we identify a coverage concern.

How often can I receive massage?

The frequency and duration of treatment depend on your prescription, treatment plan, progress, and the insurer’s requirements. We do not promise a predetermined number of covered visits.

What if I have more than one painful area?

Workers’ compensation treatment must remain related to the condition or body areas accepted under your claim. Tell us about all of your symptoms, but understand that the insurer may not cover treatment for an unrelated or unaccepted condition.

Can massage be coordinated with physical therapy, chiropractic care, or medical treatment?

Yes. Massage is often one part of a broader recovery plan. With appropriate authorization, treatment information may be coordinated with your prescribing provider and other members of your healthcare team.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Your first visit includes a discussion of the injury, your symptoms, relevant work and daily activities, and your treatment goals. Your therapist will explain the proposed approach and adjust treatment according to your comfort. Documentation will be more detailed than it is for a self-pay wellness massage.
